Geothermal Well

Midland is the first town in the state to introduce geothermal heating for public buildings. With natural water temperature of 152 degrees, water pressure at 260 lbs./sq. inch, and a flow 180 gallons/minute, this is a unique and valuable resource to our community and to any industry or business that may locate here. Our school, fire hall, city library, Legion hall, and restaurant/lounge are all equipped with economical geothermal heating units.

The Mechanical Engineering Dept. of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology completed a cost comparison study of the water energy, using propane, fuel oil, and electric heat. The results show the cost of energy extracted from the well water is essentially free except for the cost of pumping it. Using an electric pump, cost would be approximately $0.13 per kw. hr. With the current fuel prices, calling this economical is an understatement.

The Economic Development Board is seeking businesses to locate here, taking advantage of this cost-efficient energy source. Greenhouse, spa, fish farm, honey extraction, pressed bird seed and similar businesses would thrive here. Give us a call at 605-843-2564 or 605-843-2115.
